Right  now….you may be saying…..What a HARSH statement.
You are right. It is meant to be a harsh statement.

We are a team motivated to make a difference.  Many of the products we have been using in our homes may be challenging the health of our family! And we are not aware of the dangers.

The headlines read:

What is lindane?

Lindane is a pesticide in the same chemical family as DDT.  It has been listed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a Persistent, Bioaccumulative and Toxic Chemical, meaning that it lingers for a long period in the environment, moves up the food chain, and is toxic to humans and wildlife.  What is lindane used for?

Lindane is used in a prescription shampoo, often called Kwell, to treat head lice.  It is also used in a prescription cream to treat the skin mite scabies.

Be sure you provide a non-chemical choice for your children!  Why?

Every 30 SECONDS a child is poisoned in the United States!

“PARENTS and manufacturers need to do more to protect children from exposure to toxic products in the HOME….” Monica Spann of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

Just because it’s found on the store shelf…..DOES NOT MEAN IT’S SAFE!

Staying HOME may be hazardous to your health.

Toxins found in the home injured 789,000 Americans between 1992-1995. Of chemicals found in the home, 150 have been linked to allergies, birth defects, cancer and psychological abnormalities.

Toxins in U.S. homes now account for 90% of all reported poisoning each year.

Figures include everything from non-fatal aspirin overdose to deadly consumption of drain cleaners.

Do your products contain any of these carcinogens, cancer-causing agents, toxins,  irritants, contaminants or potentially harmful ingredients?

Approximately 70,000 chemicals are now in commercial production, many of which are used in household products. Many of these chemicals accumulate in the human body and cause cancer and other diseases, yet they have been inadequately tested or remain completely untested for their safety.

Toxic chemicals enter your body three ways:

  • Eating or drinking a substance
  • Breathing it
  • Absorbing it through the skin

Common household products could kill your child.

Most parents THINK they keep HARMFUL products out of the reach of SMALL children. What do you have under your sink? Bleach? Ammonia? Dishwasher detergent? Window cleaner?

The #1 contributing factor in poisonings of 3 to 7 years old
is DISTRACTION!
And…families are affected, too!

LONG-TERM HEALTH HAZARDS OF HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS

Most poisonings happen slowly, over a long period of time, by daily exposures to toxins in the air, and toxic chemicals that come into contact with the skin. Household products are amount the most toxic substances we encounter daily.

In one study conducted over a fifteen-year period, women who worked at home had 54% higher death rate from cancer than women who had jobs away from the home!

The study concluded that the increased death rate in the women was due to daily exposure to the hazardous chemicals found in ordinary household products.

  • Household disinfectants account for 93% of SEVERE poisonings among young children.

  • Disinfectants are considered PESTICIDES.
“Cide” in Pesticides means TO KILL

  • 80,000 children in the U.S., annually ingest pesticides, the majority of  which  are KITCHEN and BATHROOM CLEANERS.

  • Out of 900 pesticides commonly used in the home, FOUR  DISINFECTANTS accounted for virtually ALL poisonings.  According to the American Association of Poison Control Center, a total of 7,434 children under the age of 6 ingested these products.

“No one should think that because the [Environmental Protection Agency] allows it, a pesticide is safe. No pesticide is safe. They're designed to kill living organisms. They should be treated with respect -including the warnings on the label." Jerome Blondell, EPA's pesticides office. USA Today, February 27,1995.

From the White House: President George W. Bush                            Oct. 5, 2002

Child Health Day, 2002

On child health day, we renew our commitment to the well-being and safety of our children. Parents, families, teachers, and neighbors all play important roles in preparing children to face life’s physical, spiritual, intellectual, and emotional demands.

For the future of our country, we must work together to provide our young people with the knowledge and skills they need to be safe, self-confidents, and successful.

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) classifies cosmetics and personal care products, but does not regulate them.

Safe Cosmetics

  • FDA monitors cosmetic products to be sure that they are safe and properly labeled. But these products and their ingredients are not reviewed or approved by FDA before they are sold to the public, and FDA cannot require safety testing.

In 1938, the FDA granted self-regulation to the Cosmetics, Toiletries and Fragrance Association (CTFA), the self-appointed industry organization. With The exception of color additives and a few prohibited ingredients, a cosmetic manufacturer may use almost any raw material as a cosmetic ingredient and market the product without an approval from FDA.

What this means is that the industry does not have to account to anyone, not even the FDA. The direct result of industry self-regulation is that many products on the market today that we use constantly--and worse, products that we UNKNOWINGLY use on our children and even babies in the womb -- are TOXIC

Wayne Stevenson of the FDA Cosmetics Registration Section says, "The cosmetic manufacturers aren't required to submit safety data to the FDA, so we don't really know what sorts of tests they run. When they run tests, they keep the results in their own files.”

The FDA must prove in a court of law that a product may be injurious... before the product can be recalled. The FDA admits they don't have the budget to win in court against the giant cosmetic companies.

NOTE: All that's required for a chemical to be on the FDA GRAS List
(Generally Recognized As Safe" ) is that no one has shown it to be UNSAFE.

A "U.S. News and World Report" article published in 1998 stated:

"We look good, we smell good, and we have just exposed ourselves to 200 different chemicals a day, through personal care products." Now, four years later, that number is probably more like 300...."

Facts you need to know about cancer

  • One in three people will contract cancer, and one in four will die from the disease.

  • Within five years, cancer will surpass heart disease as the leading cause of death, according to the American Hospital Association.

  • During the 1990s, nearly 2 million women will have been diagnosed with breast cancer and 460,000 will have died. Between 1950 and 1989, the incidence of breast cancer increased by 53 percent.

"We spend close to $100 billion a year on cancer treatment in this country."

If we are going to get on top of this problem, we absolutely have to focus more on prevention." It’s time to take ACTION!
